How Progesterone and PdG Tests are Related

Progesterone is responsible for regulation of your menstrual cycle as well as supporting early pregnancy. Couples use progesterone testing to confirm ovulation time when they are trying to conceive. Progesterone serum tests are a blood test performed at the clinic.

Today with the PdG testing kit you can do it at home. Confirming ovulation has become accessible and easy.

How does PdG relate to progesterone?

PdG [Pregnanediol Glucuronide] is hormone progesterone’s urine metabolite. After ovulation, the empty follicle on your ovaries produces progesterone and it circulates across the body via the bloodstream. It is released finally in your urine after the liver metabolizes it as PdG.

When PdG levels are elevated, it means your progesterone production has also increased. Several days of using Proov PdG test strips consistently helps to gain an insight of your PdG levels over time and whether or not ovulation was successful ovulation.

Reasons to take PdG test strip

It helps women along their fertility journeys. Especially for those women struggling to get pregnant or those with PCOS, which can cause anovulation.

A PdG tests helps your doctor get an idea if your body is normally ovulating. If it is not, then further treatment options and advice can be offered.

If you are pregnant and would like to test your PdG levels, we recommend talking to your doctor. PdG tests are not to be used during pregnancy.

Which is the best time for progesterone testing?

Progesterone should be highest from days 7 to 10 after ovulation. This is when PdG should be elevated as well.

If ovulation has happened then there will be a noticeable increase in progesterone detected. If you don’t detect an increase, then it is a sign that you have not ovulated or potentially miscalculated your ovulation date.

At the end of the luteal phase, the progesterone level will drop. This likely means you did not conceive and you will soon have a regular menstrual period.

In case of successful implantation, progesterone will stay elevated. Progesterone helps provide the uterine lining and fetus with the necessary nutrients as the fetus grows.

How to monitor progesterone at home

A PdG testing kit is an easy and convenient way to keep track of your progesterone level. Instead of measuring progesterone levels in the blood, the test uses progesterone’s metabolized form PdG found in the urine. It offers 99% accurate and non-invasive insight into ovulation and your PdG levels over time.

How to read PdG results

If you use the Proov PdG strips then you will get either a positive or negative result. A results is positive when there is only one line present and it means you have a minimum of 5ug/mL in urine, which means ovulation has happened. A negative result occurs when two lines are present, and it means you have less than 5ug/mL in urine.

If you are unable to conceive within a year, it is time to seek medical help because progesterone level inaccuracy can be due to hormonal imbalance or suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome. The understanding of the fertile window helps to plan conceiving attempts around those most fertile days. Besides, you also get to know that ovulation has happened.
